Miss Penny McManus MB ChB, FRCS, FRCS (Gen Surg)
Penny McManus qualified from Liverpool University Medical School in 1990 and has been a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in Hull since 2004 specialising in breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery.
Penny helped to pioneer the technique of fat transfer for breast reconstruction and asymmetry and has lectured on this both in the UK and abroad. She teaches the technique on the Royal College of Surgeons Speciality Skills Course, of which she is a regular faculty member and also runs her own hands on courses in Hull.
Penny has recently been involved in the RCS work around standards in cosmetic surgery following the PIP scandal, and has helped to produce patient information on cosmetic breast procedures for NHS Choices. She is a member of the Association of Breast Surgeons and Women in Surgery.
Penny travels annually to Pakistan to do voluntary work in breast cancer awareness and training of local surgeons with a Hull based charity (www.opsaacharity.com).

Professor Philip J Drew BSc MBBS MD(Hons) MS FRCS (Eng) FRCS (Glasg) FRCS (Ed) FRCS (Gen)
Professor Drew qualified at St Mary’s Hospital, part of Imperial College, London, in 1990.
In addition to the basic MBBS degrees he holds two higher medical degrees with both a Master of Surgery and Doctor of Medicine with Honours. He has published several books and over 100 scientific articles with his main interests being in the molecular biology of breast cancer, reconstructive breast surgery and gynaecomastia. He is regularly invited to lecture nationally and internationally.
He is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England and examines undergraduate and post graduate degrees for many Universities both at home and abroad.

Professor Gerard John Byrne MB ChB MD FRCS (Gen Surgery), NTF, FHEA, MAME
Professor Byrne has been an established Oncoplastic and Aesthetic Breast Specialist at Spire Manchester Hospital for over 10 years. Having performed several thousand breast cancer and breast reconstruction operations, over two thousand breast augmentations and breast reductions, and many hundreds of other symptomatic and cosmetic breast procedures he is one of the most experienced and respected Breast Surgeons in the North of England.
Professor Byrne passionately believes that patients have the right to understand fully all treatment options available to them so that they can make fully informed decisions about their treatment and understand any risks and how to avoid them.
Professor Byrne has a particular interest in surgical training and medical education and is the Founder Director of The Academy at University Hospital South Manchester and Dean & Director of Education & Quality at Health Education England (North). Professor Byrne has a deep commitment to low income countries and spends some time each year in sub-Saharan Africa and South West Asia assisting the improvement of healthcare systems.

Mr Simon Smith BSc, MBBs, MS FRCS (Gen Surgery)
Mr Simon Smith is a Consultant General Surgeon who specialises in breast and endocrine surgery. He is an ‘Oncoplastic’ Breast Surgeon performing not only resectional breast surgery for breast cancer, but also many reconstructive and cosmetic breast procedures. Mr Smith qualified from St. Mary’s Hospital, Paddington in 1993, and remained in and around West London for the majority of his postgraduate training. He is a fully accredited general surgeon, and won the Association of Surgeons Gold Medal for top position in the UK in the Intercollegiate Surgical Board Examinations in general and breast surgery.
Mr Smith trained in breast surgery at several breast units, including St. Mary’s, Hillingdon, Colchester and Chelmsford. Training in reconstructive and cosmetic breast surgery was gained at St. Mary’s, and subsequently on the National Oncoplastic Fellowship hosted at Colchester & St Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery at Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford.
Mr Smith underwent endocrine surgery training at St. Mary’s, London and as Senior Registrar at Hammersmith Hospital; the largest endocrine surgical centre in the UK.

Mr Steven Thrush MBBS, FRCS (Gen Surgery)
Having trained in London as a general surgeon Mr Thrush undertook posts in Leading Breast Units to reach a level of competency for modern breast practice (Oncoplastic surgery).
Since starting at WRH/KGH Mr Thrush has set up a breast reconstructive service, reduced the rate of mastectomies undertaken and set up a charity appeal to build a specialist breast unit.
Mr Thrush is also an endocrine surgeon and provide a surgical treatment for parathyroid and thyroid disease, is the Lead for Breast at Worcester, Deputy Lead for Breast for the Three Counties Network and Deputy Lead for Endocrine Cancer for the Three Counties and is also faculty for the Royal College of Surgeons Breast Teaching programme.
Miss Anne Tansley MBCHB, FRCS(ED), FRCS
Anne Tansley qualified from Liverpool Medical School in 1992 and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh.
She was appointed as a specialist breast and reconstructive Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in 2006 having completed full training in General Surgery and specialist training in Oncoplastic breast surgery including a 12 months National Oncoplastic Breast Fellowship. Anne works at Spire Liverpool and Spire Murrayfield offering a complete private breast service from cosmetic breast surgery to breast assessment, cancer and reconstructive breast surgery. Anne specialises in implant based surgery, offering breast volume enhancement, restoration and implant based reconstruction. She is familiar with both round and teardrop shaped implants as well as a wide choice of implant manufacturers. Anne also specialises in breast uplift and reduction (mammaplasty) surgery, including minimal scar techniques and their uses in both cosmetic and breast cancer procedures.
Anne has a strong interest in surgical education, learning skills and communicating knowledge. Raising standards in education improves patient care and safety and supports patients in making fully informed decisions.
